Save the Children is advocating for children’s rights in more than 130 countries all over the world basing our work on the values and principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Our programme aims to ensure that children’s rights are always fulfilled in all environments: at home, in school and in other different settings and also that children know their rights and know of how to apply them.

Save the Children Norway in Russia (SCNiR) prioritizes the following thematic areas in our work:

Overview of SCNiR’s work within the current thematic areas is given below.

Fullfilling children's rights to quality education (Inclusive Education)

As of 2015 SCNiR has been implementing Inclusive Education projects “Equal Rights-Equal Opportunities”. The projects are aimed at social integration of children with disabilities through access to quality education.

These projects enable providing support to children with disabilities and SCNiR partner schools conduct holistic psychological and pedagogical follow-up to children.

Projects “Equal Rights-Equal Opportunities” include the following components:

  • improvement of conditions for studying mainstream educational program for the children with leaning difficulties;
  • strengthening follow-up for children with disabilities (speech-training, psychological and pedagogical) through competence-building of specialists
  • socialization of children with disabilities through their involvement in various kinds of positive leisure activities;

 Our partners are two schools: Municipal budgetary educational organization Basic Secondary School No. 20 named after M.Y. Kozlov in Nikel and Governmental regional budgetary organization of Murmansk region “Center of  Psychological, Pedagogical, Medical and Social Support”. Also from 2016 the Center of  Psychological, Pedagogical, Medical and Social Support of the Murmansk region became a new partner in “Equal Rights-Equal Opportunities” project.

Strengthening child rights governance (promoting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child)

Promotion of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is at the core of our work.

An essential component of work within this thematic area is our cooperation with Ombudsmen for Children’s Rights in different regions of the Russian North-West which is aimed at dissemination of child-rights knowledge and materials and development of the institution of Ombudsman. Thus in 2011 cooperation with Ombudsman for Children’s Rights in the Murmansk region started and was followed by similar cooperation with Ombudsman for Children’s Rights in the Archangelsk region (for the period 2011-2013). Cooperation in the sphere of children’s rights protection and promotion of the values of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is aimed at working out and publishing of awareness-raising and guiding materials related to child rights protection and child legal interests.

In late 2012 SCNiR started cooperation with Ombudsperson for Children’s Rights in St. – Petersburg city. In 2013 based on discussion within session of Coordination Council of Ombudsmen for Children’s Rights in the North – Western Federal District held in Archangelsk SCNiR signed a Protocol of Cooperation with the Council for the period of 2013-2016. Coordination Council of Ombudsmen for Children’s Rights in the North – Western Federal District was established in 2011 and unites Ombudspersons from Republics of Karelia and Komi, regions of Archangelsk, Vologda, Murmansk, Novgorod, Pskov and Kaliningrad, Leningradskaya oblast as well as Nenets autonomous okrug and St – Petersburg city. Later, in April 2013 SCNiR concluded an Agreement on Cooperation with Ombudsperson for Children’s Rights in the Nenets Autonomous okrug.
